Almost all the gold ever mined still exists today—the metal is just about indestructible. All 182,000 tons is only enough to fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools. This is precisely what makes gold so valuable, its scarcity. To get gold, you need to drill through 275 tons of rock, pulverize it, chemically treat it, and then you have some solid gold pieces. The only other way to get gold is to create it.

There’s a machine called the particle accelerator that is essentially an atom smasher. The particle accelerator smashes particles at the molecular level in order to create new one. Hence, we can create gold from cheap metals. However, the process costs far more than mining gold.
