Ever had the hiccups for such a lengthy amount of time you thought you might go insane? There are many homemade remedies that are prescribed such as holding your breath or drinking water, but these methods are often unreliable and only prolong them until later. The most effective, non-medical, method we know of is simple: eat some sugar.

Hiccups are caused by a spasm in the diaphragm, which is the muscle between your chest and belly that helps airflow, and we actually aren’t all that sure why they occur. In order to stop hiccups the vagus nerve, which is a cranial nerve that allows sensory information about the body’s organs to pass to the brain, must be triggered by another, more powerful, sensation.

Once sugar touches the nerve it forgets to send signals to the brain telling you to hiccup and just tells your brain that you ate sugar. If this doesn’t work because of an imbalance in the brain, more extreme measures can be taken such as implanting a stimulator in the chest that sends rhythmic bursts of electricity to the vagus nerve to get you to stop hiccupping. We’re hoping sugar does the trick!
