Dolly Parton has donated over 40,000,000 books to children worldwide!

It’s a little known fact that Dolly Parton has launched a charity targeted towards small children. The charity is called ‘Imagination Library’, and has changed the lives of children worldwide. Imagination Library donates age appropriate books to children under the age of 5 to help them improve literacy skills, and get them excited about reading.

Since the charity launched in 1996, literacy scores for young children in the areas that Dolly Parton has donated books have actually gone up significantly. The books are donated to 1600 communities, to around 700,000 children each and every month.

Dolly Parton says this charity is important for the world to have because she says it makes books readily available for children who can not necessarily afford them, and gets them to read on a regular basis.

A man gave away his fortune to charity and then donated one of his kidney’s to a stranger!

Zell Kravinsky is an American investor, utilitarian, and poet. He earned himself two Ph.D.’s at the University of Philadelphia. He got his B.A. from Dartmouth College in Asian Studies and Indian Studies. After gaining a small fortune himself, he virtually gave it all away to various charities. He concentrated his work on public health organizations that ended up being $45 million.

After Kravinsky learned that many African-Americans have difficulty obtaining kidneys from family members, he sought out a hospital in Philadelphia that would allow him to donate one of his kidneys to a lower-income black person. Kravinsky justified the donation mathematically saying that the chances of dying as a result of the procedure would have been about 1 in 4,000. Kravinsky believed that, under the circumstances, "to withhold a kidney from someone who would otherwise die means valuing one’s own life at 4,000 times that of a stranger", a ratio he termed "obscene."

Jon Bon Jovi says he understands that money is extremely tight for most families, and that there are too many people in the world that are going hungry, so he got the idea to open this restaurant! The rules are if you don’t pay you can volunteer to work at the restaurant until your meal is paid for!

After killing a man in the ring, Sugar Ray Robinson gave that man's mom his earnings for his next 4 fights

Jim Doyle was born in 1924 and debuted as a boxer in 1941. He fought in a total of 53 fights and won 43 of them. In 1947, he challenged Sugar Ray Robinson for the World Welterweight Title and planned to buy his mother a house with the winnings. Doyle had suffered heavy knockouts in California prior to the fight and the boxing commission refused to allow him to participate in any more.

However, Robinson agreed to fight him and the results were disastrous. During the fight, Robinson had the advantage every round except the sixth. After staggering twice and then being hurt, Robinson responded with a single left hook that ended things. Doyle was struck in the head and his body went rigid.

Robinson described the event saying, “That punch knocked Jimmy rigid.... With heels resting against the canvas as if hinged, Doyle's body went down. It struck the floor with a thud, like a rigid mass falling. His head crashed against the padded canvas, and as the referee started the count. Doyle raised his head and rested on his elbows.... The referee counted to ten. Doyle was out."

He was quickly rushed to St. Vincent’s Charity Hospital but failed to regain consciousness and was pronounced dead several hours later. Criminal charged were threatened against Robinson for fighting him, but none ever materialized. Robinson felt so terrible for what he had done that he gave the earnings of his next four fights to Doyle’s mother, fulfilling Doyle’s last wish of buying her a house.

Billionaire Chuck Feeney donated most of his fortune anonymously.

You probably hear all the time about rich people graciously donating their fortunes to the less fortunate. But, Chuck Feeney likes to keep his charitable efforts under the radar. Last year, the foundation Feeney created, the Atlantic Philanthropies gave $450 million in grants around the world, more than any US charity except the Ford and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations.

Feeney has actually worked very hard to disguise his identity, wealth, and generosity. Atlantic does not appear in the annual rankings of the biggest American philanthropies because it was set up in Bermuda. Feeney himself owns no homes, but stays in apartments around the world rented by the foundation. He flies coach and rides the subway. His five children worked summers as waiters, hotel maids, and cashiers! More of Feeney’s secrets are exposed in the source!

In 1995, St. Jude’s hospital got an anonymous letter containing the$1 million McDonald’s Monopoly piece!

For those of you who are not familiar with television, the McDonald’s Monopoly game is a sweepstakes promoting McDonald’s and Hasbro (the creators of Monopoly). The promotion has been offered in the United States, Canada, Poland, Hong Kong, etc. since 1987. In 2000, the US promotion was paused after the discovery of a fraud.

A subcontracting company called Simon Marketing had been hired by McDonald’s to organize and promote the game. Ironically however, their Chief of SECURITY, Jerome P Jacobson STOLE the most expensive game pieces and passed them to associates who would redeem them and share the proceeds. Between1995-2000, the associates had a monopoly over all the top prizes. They netted over $24 million.

The scheme was eventually uncovered when one of the participants informed the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, in his time as a fraudster, Jacobson also managed to do some charity. In 1995, he sent the winning piece to St.Jude Children’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Although the game rules prohibited the transfer of prizes, McDonald’s is still making the $50,000 annual payments.

Some emergency personnel carry along teddy bears to give to children who’ve been through trauma!

The Teddy Bear Cops Program raises money to buy teddy bears. The bears are then given to police officers and fire and emergency personnel to keep in their vehicles.

They give the bears to children who have experienced trauma or catastrophe to help reduce the risk of permanent trauma and damage to the children emotionally. The program encourages private individuals and organizations to send in teddy bears to police and fire departments in their own area and across the country.

The Teddy Bear Cops Program pushes to get bears to children who’ve been abused especially. The website encourages individuals to buy bears that are safe for children and mail them to local police stations, and put a note in with the bears and explain their purpose.

Officers will keep the bears in their cop cars until they are at a scene with a child who’s undergone a traumatic situation. The bears are known to lessen the effect of shock or keep the child from experiencing shock at all.

Sandra Bullock donated a million dollars to Japanese relief efforts.

As far as we know, this is the largest donation by any celebrity who is not actually Japanese. Bullock gave the money to the American Red Cross in order to aid the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami. Read more about Bullock\'s incredible donation here.

Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners also donated a great deal of cash to the cause. $1.24 million seems like an odd number to choose until you realize that it is the equivalent of 100 million yen. The Japanese outfielder makes around $20 million a year, so he can definitely afford it, but it makes the donation no less generous. You can read more about Ichiro\'s donation and fan reactions in this story. We commend Ichiro, Sandra, and all other donors for their selfless charity. Hopefully more people follow in their example, rather than make crummy jokes about it like Gilbert Gottfried.

Steve McQueen would demand free clothes from movie studios so he could donate them to the boy's reformatory he went to!

Steve McQueen is one of the most famous actors of all time. He had an odd reputation when it came to his dealings with movie studios though. McQueen was known for requesting bulk amounts of jeans, men's razors and other essentials from a studio when he agreed to do a film with them.

People later found out that McQueen was donating these items to the Boy's Republic Reformatory School. He attended the school as a teen and would occasionally go back to visit with the students.

McQueen had a tough childhood; his father left he and his mom alone, who developed alcoholism. She eventually left him with his granparents until his teen years. She had remarried by then, and McQueen didn't like his stepfather one bit.

McQueen was sent to the California Junior Boys Republic reform school because he threatened to kill his stepfather after the police caught him stealing hubcaps.

Philip Workman, 53, requested that in place of his final meal, a vegetarian pizza be donated to any homeless man located near Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. The prison officials however, refused to honor his request, saying that they do not donate to charities.

This apparently upset a few of the witnesses of the execution. So, they paid for and delivered $1,200 worth of pizzas to hundreds of homeless people around Nashville, Tennessee. “I was like, Wow, Jesus!”” said Marvin Champion, an employee of Nashville’s Rescue Mission, “I used to be homeless, so I know how rough it gets. I seen some bad times. But we got pizza to feed enough people for a while.”

This story is evidence of how even the “worst” in our society have some good inside of them, about how inspiration can leap out from just about anywhere.

The Christmas tree in London's Trafalgar Square is donated every year by Norway!

This is one of those heart warming traditions that have endured for decades. Each year, the people of Oslo, Norway send the people of London a Christmas tree. They have done this since 1947 as a token of gratitude for the help that the British armed forces gave to Norway during World War 2.

The tree is actually decorated in traditional Norwegian style and adorned with 500 lights. The tree is a 50- to 60-year-old Norway spruce and is cut in November and sent to Great Britain by sea. The people of London have made the tree the center of their Christmas celebration around Trafalgar square.

Bob Marley lied about who wrote one of his songs so the money could go to a soup kitchen!

Bob Marley was well known for his Rastafarian beliefs and promotion of love as a tool. Many of his songs, which often define the reggae genre, promote peace and the notion of helping others, and unlike many celebrities, Marley actually practiced what he preached.

When the song “No Woman, No Cry” was released the credit was given to Vincent Ford, a friend of Marley’s who operated a soup kitchen in Jamaica. Although it is almost universally accepted that Marley actually wrote the song, and because the soup kitchen was going out of business from lack of funds, Marley simply had all of the profits donated to ensure its survival!

A prisoner offered his last kidney to a dying daughter. It caused a huge biomedical ethics debate!

Prisoner David Patterson, who is an inmate in California, caused a huge stir in the medical community when he asked to give up his kidney for his 16-year-old daughter. While it is not uncommon to donate a single kidney from one living person to another, what was strange was that he was offering up his only remaining kidney.

He had already donated the first one to his daughter, whom he had previously had little contact with. She was in need of a replacement for the first one he gave her because it was failing. The problem for the medical community was whether to allow this second donation.

Donating one kidney is allowed because a person can live a long, fairly normal life with just one kidney. The reason a person cannot donate a second kidney is because it significantly shortens their lifespan and they must be on dialysis regularly to survive.

For the medical community, this is a sacrifice that cannot be made. Medical experts cannot be expected to help one person give up their organs and life for the sake of another person. They can only donate what they can live without in a reasonable manner.
