An impostor falsely accepted an Oscar and was never caught!
Back in 1939, Alice Brady was up for best supporting actress for her work in 1937’s “In Old Chicago.” However, Brady was extremely sick from cancer and could not attend the award ceremony. Instead, when she was presented with the award at the show a random man walked on stage claiming he was accepting it on her behalf.
It was not until later that the Academy realized he was a stranger and Brady had no knowledge of who he was. An apology was issued and another statue was made for Brady. Unfortunately, she passed away before she could receive it. To this day the thief and the award were never found. Hopefully they’ve stepped up security by now, but who thinks someone could get away with that today?
