Before Parker Brothers bought and took over the game of Monopoly, the game was intended to be a criticism of the capitalist economic system. The very first version of Monopoly was patented in 1904 and it was called "The Landlord's Game."

Many of the familiar Monopoly staples show up in The Landlord's Game. It had properties that got more expensive as you went around the board, the jail, free parking and the Go space (which was called "Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages."

Magie intended her game to be a teaching tool about the injustices of capitalism, she thought that landlords were parasites and the whole point of the game was to show that a "single tax" on landlords would be enough to replace all other taxes. However, the player with the most money still won... kinda defeating the whole purpose of the game.
