Sudoku caused a 700% increase in the sales of pencils!

The pencil has stood the test of time. Although you might think that the advent of new technologies might replace it and eventually kill it, it has actually seen an increase in production over the last decade.

Part of the increase is thanks to the Sudoku phenomenon. Once Sudoku became popular, pencil sales increased 700 percent in the following year.

Interestingly, it seems like the good ol’ wooden pencil has benefitted the most from this increase. Statistics and sales show that we prefer the old, wooden, encased lead pencils that Lipman patented so many years ago.
