In 1903 Mary Anderson received a patent for her new invention, a windshield wiper. She got the idea from seeing a trolley driving around with the window open because it was covered in frost and the driver couldn't see.
Anna Connelly patented the first fire escape in 1887. Though other fire escapes had been invented before, hers was the basis for modern fire escapes since it had an exterior staircase.
