Why did the Tolkien family feel ripped off by the Lord of the Rings movies?


The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful book and film series of all time. When the films were released between 2001 and 2003, they shattered records around the World and garnered about $6 billion in sales from movie tickets, DVDs, and merchandise. Most people expect that Tolkien’s family received a healthy portion of the profits for inspiring the massive franchise, but the exact opposite is true!

The family only received around $62,500 from the nearly $6 billion and were supposed to receive 7.5%. Tolkien’s family then sued Warner Bros. who produced the movies, and have since settled with an undisclosed amount. The money that goes to Tolkien’s family will be distributed among various philanthropic and charitable causes.
