Sir Thomas Sean Connery is an actor, producer, and winner of an Academy award, two BAFTA’s, 3 Golden Globes, and the “Sexiest Man of the Century” award at the age of 69. He is best known for portraying the character James Bond in the seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983.
With all these accomplishments under his belt, is it really that much of a surprise that he was the first choice to play Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings series? CNN reported that the actor was offered up to 15% of the worldwide box office receipts to play the part. However, he refused, saying that he did “not understand the script.”
After the series went on to become a huge hit and he realized that he had given up around $400 million, Connery decided to accept the lead role in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, despite not “understanding” it either. That didn't go over so well.
