After Kanye West's actions at the 2009 VMAs Comedy Central played the South Park episode 'Fishsticks' four times in a row as payback.
The 2009 Video Music Awards is something we all remember. When Taylor Swift won the award for best music video, Kanye West jumped on stage, swiped the microphone, and declared “I’m really happy for you Taylor, I’ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!”
It was probably the high point of Kanye West’s ego train (except for maybe that time he said people treat him like Hitler). South Park’s creators had already ragged on Kanye for his ego though. Back in April of that year, the South Park episode “Fishsticks” aired. The episode focused on a joke that Carlos Mencia claimed to have invented and that Kanye West didn’t seem to understand.
Carlos Mencia was parodied for his habit of stealing jokes, which he responded to well by saying “...it was hysterical. Catch the rerun.” Kanye too responded well by saying “South Park murdered me last night and it’s pretty damn funny. It’s hurts my feelings but what can you expect from South Park! [sic].”
Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the show’s creators, were still surprised by Kanye’s reaction, because all the episode did was tease him for his ego and call him a gay fish. Following the VMA fiasco, Comedy Central re-broadcasted the episode for two straight hours on September 15, 2009.
