Jim Carrey spent his teenage years attending high school during the day and working 8 hour cleaning shifts every night to support his family. There came a point when the Carrey’s financial difficulties forced Jim out of school and into a VW bus on his elder sister Pat’s driveway with his mother and father. They lived there for a while, trying desperately to get back on their feet.
However, even in the midst of their difficulties, Jim’s supportive and comedy-loving father helped him put together stage acts. He even drove their “home” to Toronto so that Jim could debut at an open mic night at a comedy club. Initially, his impersonations tanked and made him doubt his ability to become a professional entertainer.
But when the Carrey family achieved financial prosperity again and bought a brand new house, Jim was back on stage with a brand new act. He soon started performing regular paid shows, gaining a local reputation, and making his way to where he is today.
It should be noted that Jim’s first impersonations were of animals at the age of 7, in an attempt to make his bed-ridden, sick mother laugh. Now, he’s climbed his way out of poverty and his bringing the gift of laughter to millions of people around the world.
